Automate Jira + Figma with GAIA
Link Figma designs to Jira tickets and streamline design review workflows
To connect Figma and Jira, install the Figma for Jira app from the Atlassian Marketplace. With it, you paste a Figma file or frame link into a Jira issue and the issue shows a live preview of the design. On the Figma side, Jira plugins for Dev Mode and Jira widgets for FigJam let you view and link issues from inside a file. Those two pieces cover embedding Figma in Jira and linking designs to tickets.
GAIA does not connect to Figma, so it cannot read frames, versions, or comments in your files. What it handles is the Jira work around design handoff: it creates issues that carry the Figma links you give it, moves them through your workflow, comments on them, and tells designers and engineers when something needs them, through Slack or email.
Jira has no event trigger in GAIA, so these routines run on a schedule you set (hourly, every morning) or when you ask. If you need a change in Figma to update Jira the moment it happens, that comes from the Figma for Jira app or a Figma plugin, not from GAIA.
5 things you can automate
Everything GAIA can do when Jira and Figma are connected.
Create Jira issues with the design link attached
Paste a Figma link in chat and describe the work. GAIA creates the Jira issue in the right project with a summary, a description, and the Figma URL, so the Figma for Jira app can show the preview.
Turn design review notes into Jira issues
Paste your review notes or a list of requested changes, and GAIA files one Jira issue per item with the related Figma link, plus the assignee and labels you name.
Tell designers when their tickets enter development
On a schedule, GAIA checks Jira for design-labeled issues that moved to In Progress since the last run and messages the designer in Slack or by email with the issue link.
Send a weekly design handoff report
Every week, GAIA searches Jira for design-related issues and sends you a summary: what is waiting on design, what is in development, and which issues have no Figma link in their description.
Find the Jira issues behind a design
Ask which Jira issues mention a Figma file, and GAIA searches issue text for the link or file name and lists the matches with their status and assignee.
How to set it up
Connect Jira and Figma to GAIA in three steps.
- 1
Install Figma for Jira, then connect Jira to GAIA
Install the Figma for Jira app in your Jira Cloud site for design previews. Then connect Jira to GAIA from the integrations page through Atlassian sign-in. Connect Slack or Gmail too if you want GAIA to send alerts.
- 2
Describe the routine in plain English
Create a workflow, for example: "Every weekday at 10am, find issues in project APP with the label design that moved to In Progress yesterday, and message the designer in #design." Or ask in chat to file issues from a Figma link.
- 3
GAIA runs it in the background
Scheduled workflows run on your timetable and report what they did. Destructive actions such as deleting issues or comments ask for your approval first, following your approval settings.
