Automate Linear + Figma with GAIA
Use Linear's Figma integration for design previews, and GAIA for the Linear, GitHub and Slack work around handoff
To integrate Figma with Linear, turn on Linear's own Figma integration from Linear's integrations settings. After that, a Figma file or frame link pasted into a Linear issue or comment shows a live preview of the design. On the Figma side, Linear's Figma plugin lets you create a Linear issue from a selected frame, or link an existing one, without leaving the file. Those two pieces are the official Linear Figma integration: designs attached to issues, and issues created from designs.
If your team also runs GitHub and Slack, connect them natively in Linear too. The GitHub integration links pull requests to issues and moves issues forward as pull requests open and merge. The Slack integration creates issues from messages and posts issue updates to channels. With all three on, Linear, GitHub, Figma and Slack share links and previews without another tool in the middle.
GAIA does not connect to Figma, so it cannot read frames, versions, or comments in your files. What it handles is the work around design handoff in Linear, GitHub and Slack: it creates Linear issues that carry the Figma links you give it, reacts when issues are created, updated, or commented on, and messages designers and engineers in Slack when something needs them. Linear has event triggers in GAIA, so these workflows can run as soon as an issue changes, not only on a schedule.
5 things you can automate
Everything GAIA can do when Linear and Figma are connected.
Create Linear issues with the design link attached
Paste a Figma link in chat and describe the work. GAIA creates the Linear issue in the right team with a title, a description, and the Figma URL, so Linear's Figma integration shows the preview.
Turn design review notes into Linear issues
Paste your review notes or a list of requested changes, and GAIA files one Linear issue per item with the related Figma link, plus the assignee, labels, and cycle you name.
Tell designers when implementation starts
A workflow triggered by Linear issue updates checks for design-labeled issues that moved to In Progress and messages the designer in Slack with the issue link.
Route engineering questions on design issues to Slack
When someone comments on a design-labeled Linear issue, GAIA posts the comment and the issue link to your design channel in Slack, so designers see questions without watching Linear.
Send a weekly design handoff report
Every week, GAIA searches Linear for design-related issues and sends you a summary: what is waiting on design, what is in development, and which issues have no Figma link in their description.
How to set it up
Connect Linear and Figma to GAIA in three steps.
- 1
Turn on Linear's Figma integration, then connect Linear to GAIA
Enable the Figma integration in Linear for design previews, and install Linear's Figma plugin if designers want to file issues from Figma. Then connect Linear to GAIA from the integrations page, plus Slack or GitHub if your workflows use them.
- 2
Describe the workflow in plain English
Create a workflow, for example: "When a Linear issue with the label design moves to In Progress, message its designer in #design on Slack." Or ask in chat to file issues from a Figma link.
- 3
GAIA runs it in the background
Triggered workflows run when the Linear event arrives, scheduled ones on your timetable, and each reports what it did. Destructive actions such as deleting issues or comments follow your approval settings.
